Watch: RYA Coastal Skipper Training in Scotland aboard Solway Adventurer

There is perhaps no better way to understand what stepping up your skills truly looks like than seeing it firsthand. We owe a huge thanks to our recent crew for putting together a superb video capturing their RYA training on the Scottish West Coast.

If you are considering taking the next step in your sailing journey, this footage perfectly illustrates what to expect when you cast off with Go West Sailing.

A brilliant week on the water

From flying in over the highlands to raising the main aboard Bavaria 38 – Solway Adventurer, the video is a brilliant showcase of what makes sailing training in Scotland so unique. Under the guidance of Instructor Nick, the crew tackled a comprehensive week of practical training.

The footage highlights exactly why sailors choose the West Coast to advance their qualifications:

  • Proper Pilotage: Navigating the complex, tidal waters of the Western Isles.
  • Dynamic Conditions: Making the most of cracking sailing breezes and adapting to the environment.
  • Unmatched Rewards: Incredible drone shots of stunning anchorages, solid teamwork on deck, and even a pod of dolphins joining the yacht for the passage.

Sailors who train in Scotland leave with a deep sense of confidence. As the saying goes: if you can sail here, you can sail anywhere.

Who should take this course?

The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course is designed to bridge the gap between Day Skipper and the highly coveted Yachtmaster Coastal certification. The syllabus is entirely focused on progression and building command ability. It takes your existing day-skippering knowledge and pushes it further into advanced passage planning, night pilotage, and handling a yacht confidently in varied, dynamic coastal conditions.

To get the most out of your Coastal Skipper training, you should already possess the theoretical knowledge of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased course. You also need a minimum of 15 days at sea (including 2 as skipper), 300 miles logged, and 8 night hours.
