The Perfect All-Rounder: why Voyager is the ultimate choice for a Scottish charter

Sailing the west coast of Scotland is often described as a rite of passage for sailors. It is a landscape of rugged headlands, secret sea lochs, and islands that shift from emerald green to misty violet as the light changes. But to truly enjoy these waters, you need a vessel that strikes the perfect balance between performance and practicality.

At Go West Sailing, we are proud to offer Voyager, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379, as part of our bareboat charter fleet. Whether you are navigating the Firth of Clyde or venturing further towards the Hebrides, here is why we believe this particular yacht should be at the top of your list for your next Scottish adventure.

Perfect for the Scottish Coastline

The Sun Odyssey 379, designed by Marc Lombard, is renowned for its modern, streamlined aesthetics and impressive sailing speed. For our charterers, this means a boat that is as rewarding to helm as it is comfortable to live aboard.

One of Voyager’s standout features for the West Coast is her manoeuvrability. Scotland’s coast is dotted with charming, albeit tight, marinas and remote anchorages. Thanks to her Yanmar 29hp engine and twin wheel steering, she handles beautifully in confined spaces.

The twin helm stations not only provide excellent visibility when navigating narrow sounds but also clear the way for easy access to the fold-down bathing platform—perfect for those brave enough for a morning dip or for boarding the tender to head ashore for a local dram.

Effortless handling under sail

When the wind picks up across the Minch, you want a yacht that remains composed. Voyager performs gracefully both with and against the wind, aided by her modern hard-chine hull which provides greater stability in a gust.

We have ensured the deck layout is thoughtfully designed for ease of use, with all sail controls led back to the cockpit. Crucially, the double-ended mainsheet is accessible directly from the helm. This allows the skipper to make adjustments safely from the cockpit, all while staying protected under the shelter of the sprayhood. With a slab-reefing mainsail (complete with lazy bag) and a roller furling jib, the transition from a gentle cruise to a spirited sail is seamless.

A bright and warm sanctuary

After a day of bracing Atlantic breezes, descending into the saloon of the Sun Odyssey 379 is a revelation. The modern design features a light wood interior that feels incredibly airy, thanks to the abundance of ports and hatches providing natural light and ventilation.

Accommodation is generous for a 37-foot yacht. Voyager features three cabins—two double aft cabins and a double V-shaped cabin at the bow—sleeping up to eight people when utilising the double berth conversion in the main saloon.

Perhaps most importantly for sailing in Scotland, we have equipped the yacht with hot air central heating throughout the cabins, heads, and saloon. This ensures that even if you are visiting us in the “shoulder” seasons of spring or autumn, you’ll return to a warm, dry sanctuary at the end of the day.

Fully equipped for adventure

We make sure Voyager is ready for the realities of West Coast cruising. The galley is well-set-out with a fridge, ice box, and a two-burner cooker with a grill. We even provide a “galley starter pack” with the essentials—tea, coffee, and sugar—so you can get the kettle on the moment you step aboard.

Navigation is equally well-catered for. At the helm, you will find a centrally mounted Garmin 751 chart plotter, supplemented by two multi-function displays at each wheel providing wind, speed, and depth information. For added peace of mind, our charters include a handheld tablet with Navionics and a full set of paper charts for the Clyde.

Why Voyager?

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379 Voayger is the “Goldilocks” of our charter fleet: large enough to offer stability and space for a group of friends or a family, yet nimble enough to be managed easily by a couple.

From her sleek hull to practical touches like the outdoor shower and 13-amp AC sockets (available when on shore power), Voyager is a yacht built for the modern sailor. If you are planning to explore the incomparable West Coast of Scotland, let us provide the perfect platform to do so in comfort, style, and safety.
