Last week, the charter crew aboard Skylark completed a demanding and highly varied week of sailing, encountering a full spectrum of Scottish weather, and they shared their experiences with us. Built in 2018, Skylark is a Beneteau Oceanis 45 featuring twin helm steering and a 57HP Yanmar engine.
Her sail wardrobe is designed for fast cruising, comprising a large mainsail with lazy jacks and a roller headsail. Below decks, she offers a spacious four-cabin layout with two heads and central heating throughout, providing a comfortable and practical base for the crew.
A 12-Hour Passage to Rathlin Island
The charter week commenced with a 12-hour passage across to Northern Ireland. The first half of the journey offered beautiful conditions with flat water and no wind. However, the final crossing to Rathlin Island became a slog, requiring the crew to motor directly into a Force 4-5 headwind and an uncomfortable swell.
Shore leave in Force 6-7 conditions
The strong winds persisted into the next day, blowing a steady Force 6-7. The crew took the sensible option to remain secured and headed ashore to explore Rathlin Island, making what they described as an awesome visit to the local RSPB Rathlin West Light Seabird Centre. Following their time ashore, the crew prepared the yacht to shape a course for Campbeltown the following day.
Heavy weather drills and storm jib practice
The crew faced further challenging conditions later in the week while heading north from Pladda towards Lamlash. They initially took the weather close-hauled, sailing under a heavily reefed genoa.
Based on their assessment of the conditions, the crew decided it was an ideal time to rig the storm jib. After setting the sail, they soon came head to wind, dropped the canvas, and motored the final stretch, taking a picture of the heavy weather setup before doing so. Skylark was then safely secured on a mooring in Lamlash. It was a highly instructive day on the water, and everyone on board was very pleased with the practical sea time gained.
